It’s September, and in the world of fashion that only means one thing: Fashion Weeks.
While Paris, London, New York and
various other cities our hosting their fashion weeks, we Belgians had our
little “fashion show” moment too. A few days ago the Cohort collective
presented us their newest collections. Co-what? COHORT.
Cohort is a collective of 6 Belgian
labels who came together to promote Belgian fashion creation. At their first
show at the WIELS museum in Brussels, the 6 designers – Giuseppe Virgone, Diane van Overheem, Florence Coenraets,
Pierre-Antoine Vettorello, Mansour Badjoko and Megan Scott Manolova -
presented us their collections for the coming Spring/Summer season. The
Cohort collective was kind enough to invite us to their show, and we couldn't
help but to fall in love with one designer in particular: Giuseppe Virgone.
If you ask Giuseppe Virgone what men
will wear in the summer of 2016 the answer would be black and white, some basic
dark colors and last but not least some pearl-embroidered hand accessoiries to
put some shine in the look.
A collection is never better explained
than by the designer himself, so we sat down with Virgone and asked him the
following questions.
What does your collection represent?
EXTINGUISHE ME is an invitation to the extinction of the
human beauty and the misteries of ‘the end’. For this project, the collection evokes the mortal fate of
mankind and of misunderstanding of some wrongful acts. This work tries to
deliver the essential, to eliminate all harmful feelings that might offend our
thoughts, redefine beauty, desire and all sense of touch. It does nothing to
destroy thought, but makes it stronger. It's a collection that talks about the conflict between cultures
and mankind.
Who or what inspired you in the making
of this collection?
I was inspired by the flags that tear, all these conflicts
between religions, cultures and policies.
What makes your designs unique? What
elements of design makes people say “that’s a Giuseppe Virgone!” about one of
your pieces?
A dissected work, grated which reveals the masculine
silhouette. Material mixture and black.
Of course we have the whole collection
on photograph. Take a look at how you’ll see me strolling around Brussels the
coming summer.
